Trails by distance, time and calories
Trails for hiking, walking, cycling, running and Nordic walking — with how long each takes, how many calories it burns and how many steps it is worth.
Every trail comes down to a handful of numbers: how far it is, how much it climbs, how long it will take, how many calories it burns and, on foot, how many steps it adds to your day. This site is organised by activity, because the same distance means very different things whether you are strolling, hiking, running or riding it.

Hiking trails
Marked hiking routes through forest, bog and coast, with distance, elevation gain and how long they take on foot.
Walking routes
Easy walking loops in parks, along rivers and around towns — the kind you can do in an hour without special kit.
Cycling routes
Cycling routes on quiet roads, gravel and dedicated paths, with distance, surface and climb.
Nordic walking
Routes suited to Nordic walking with poles, which brings the upper body into an ordinary walk.
Running trails
Trail-running and jogging loops, with distance, surface and elevation for pacing your effort.
Nature trails
Short, gentle nature and boardwalk trails, often with information boards, good for families and slow walking.
How to read the numbers
Distance is the length of the route. Elevation gain is the total climbing, which adds far more effort than flat ground. Time is an estimate for a steady pace — add stops. Calories scale with your body weight and the effort; the figures here assume a 70 kg person. Steps are counted only for on-foot activities, at roughly 1,300–1,400 per kilometre.
Source: Calorie figures are MET-based estimates for a 70 kg person; time uses a Naismith-style rule. Trail data will be sourced from open contributors. · checked 2026-09-04
Frequently asked questions
How many calories does hiking burn?
Roughly 400 kcal an hour for a 70 kg walker on rolling terrain, more with a pack or on steep ground. The exact figure scales with your weight and the climb; each activity page has a table.
How many steps is a kilometre of walking?
About 1,300 to 1,400 steps per kilometre for most adults walking normally, a little fewer when running because the stride is longer. Cycling has no step equivalent.
How long will a trail take?
On foot, allow about 12 minutes per flat kilometre and add roughly 10 minutes for every 100 metres of climb (a version of Naismith's rule). Cycling is three to four times faster.
